New York, N.Y., February 15, 2013. – Montenegro and Raman Productions proudly present Brazilian musical theater icon Bibi Ferreira in her New York City debut celebrating her 90th birthday. The legendary singer, director, producer, and star will appear in a one-night-only performance backed by a 21-piece orchestra. Bibi Ferreira: BIBI IN CONCERT, Brazil’s Musical Icon, will take place at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on Sunday, April 14th, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.
To Brazilians, Bibi Ferreira means musical theatre in the same way Antonio Carlos Jobim means bossa nova. Over an 8-decade career, she directed, produced and starred in an incredible array of shows, ranging from classic Broadway musicals (she was the pioneer director of these productions in Brazil) to TV specials, opera, even an appearance in the 1947 cult movie The End of the River, which featured Indian-born actor Sabu. She won plaudits for her stage tributes to Portuguese fado star Amália Rodrigues and French chanson star Edith Piaf. Her Piaf performance enjoyed a record-breaking 28-year run in Brazil, winning her the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France’s highest accolade for an artist.
Even at age 90, Bibi continues to play to sold-out audiences in Brazil, with fans including national superstars like Gilberto Gil and Maria Bethania. In 2012 alone she performed over 75 concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to a total live audience of almost 80,000 fans. Brazilians who could not attend her live performances watched the HD broadcast of her show in over 37 movie theatres nationwide. Bibi’s extraordinary, multifaceted career also earned her a 1-hour special recently on “Programa do Jo,” Brazil’s top rated evening entertainment program with a viewing audience of 4.6 million.
The Lincoln Center concert showcases the rich variety of her repertoire with songs by famed Brazilian composers including Pixinguinha, David Nasser, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Chico Buarque, intermingled with selections from American theatre classics and works by Irving Berlin, Edith Piaf and Amalia Rodrigues.
“I’m excited about performing in New York -- but cautious,” says the tireless singer. “It’s a great responsibility, but I’m looking forward to it.”
