Mayor Booker to recognize Portuguese-American community leader Bernardino Coutinho for his 30 years of community service

Newark, NJ – June 6, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, Assemblyman Albert Coutinho, the Newark Municipal Council, members of the Portuguese-American community and other dignitaries will hold a City Hall ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 at 5:30pm to honor Bernardino Coutinho for his 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Newark and the Portuguese-American community. City Hall is located at 920 Broad Street.

As a businessman, activist, and philanthropist, Bernardino Coutinho has a long career of community service and has defined Newark’s excellence and diversity. Coutinho founded the Newark Portuguese Day Parade and Festival, which has become the largest celebration of Portuguese culture in the world outside of Portugal. In 1991, Mr. Coutinho founded the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation, which supports Portuguese Heritage Month celebrations in Newark, an inner-city soccer program which engages more than 1,200 Newark youth, and programs to assist newly-arrived immigrants and their families.
