Social venture initiative will provide Newark residents and ex-offenders With job training and placement into career-track jobs in the integrated pest management field

Newark, NJ – December 6, 2010 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, the Municipal Council, Deputy Mayor of Economic and Housing Development Stefan Pryor, Brick City Development Corporation Chief Executive Officer Lyneir Richardson, Doe Fund Founder and President George McDonald and other dignitaries will launch Pest at Rest Newark at a press conference in the City Hall First Floor Rotunda, on Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at 2:30 P.M. City Hall is located at 920 Broad Street, Newark.

As a social enterprise, Pest at Rest Newark combines principles of for-profit companies and mission-driven non-profits.  The venture will operate as a premier integrated pest management company catering to clients in Newark and the surrounding region.  The operating revenue generated by its business activities will sustain structured apprenticeships for formerly incarcerated Newarkers, who will complete on-the-job and classroom training, culminating in their graduation as licensed pesticide applicators and placement into career-track jobs.  Pest at Rest Newark specializes in integrated pest management methods that are effective against the pest and least hazardous to human health and the environment.

Pest at Rest Newark is operated by The Doe Fund, a leading non-profit organization serving homeless individuals with barriers to employment.  The Doe Fund already operates a successful and profitable Pest at Rest venture in New York City and has served other New Jersey communities such as Jersey City.
