After the event we talked to soccer writer Cesar Diaz who said has positive expectations for Klinsmann's performance. Although he aknowledged that Klinsmann has a difficult task ahead of him since the United States is not traditionally strong in this sport. When asked about the delays concerning the development of the infrastructure of Brazil for hosting next World Cup he commented that such things are common to happen and that people have no reason to worry about it. Lavagem da Rua 46, means "The Cleansing of 46th Street" in English, is an event produced by Silvana Magda’s Viva Brazil Dance Company, Inc., a Not- for- Profit, tax exempt, 501C3 organization that works in conjunction with the Brazilian Day in New York. The mission behind the Lavagem is to create a unique cultural celebration experience in the Big Apple.
“The Cleansing of the 46th Street embraces the responsibility to help expand the Brazilian culture in the world’s capital” says the event producer and general coordinator Silvana Magda. “We are fully involved in this project to maintain our traditions and promote our artists who of course, also have the particular responsibility of strengthening the positive image of Brazil abroad.”
A mystic tradition that started in the 18th century in Bahia, when an image of Christ was brought from Portugal and arrive in Brazil 1745. The attribution of miraculous powers made Our Lord of Bonfim an object of popular devotion.
It is believed that the Cleansing of Bonfim was originated in the times when the slaves were forced to wash the stairway of the Church for the Patron Saint’s party.
Currently this traditional celebration consists of an enormous procession that leaves the Church of Conceição da Praia towards the Church of Bonfim, a distance of 8 Km. Hundreds of baianas open the procession and take, both in their hands and on their heads, vases with flowers and perfumed water in order to wash the stairway and cleanse the devotees.
The procession also embraces all religions and creeds since Our Lord of Bonfim, according to the religious syncretism in Bahia, corresponds to Oxalá.
The Lavagem/Cleasing was brought abroad and reformulated for the United States by Silvana Magda, with the support of the Brazilian entrepreneur João de Matos.
This year, the Lavagem/Cleansing unites diverse voices and rhythms to genuinely represent the enchantment, the tradition of not only Bahia but all the people. This glorious event will celebrate the purification, the energy, the nature, the unification of the people and the perpetuation of peace.

Newark, NJ – July 14, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, Business Administrator Julien X. Neals, Fire Director Fateen A. Ziyad, Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio, and Fire Chief John Centanni launched the City of Newark’s first-ever joint weekly training exercises for the Police and Fire Departments on Wednesday, July 13, at the Fire Department Training Academy at 191 Orange Street. The 9-week training exercises will help better prepare both agencies for first response to multi-vehicle accidents and other emergency incidents.
The training will be held once a week on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., through mid-September at the Fire Department Training Academy. A different engine and ladder company, along with 25 members of the Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit, will participate in the nine-week training exercise, which is being conducted by Newark Fire Department Special Operations and Police Department Emergency Services Unit instructors. The goal of the training is to familiarize the two agencies with all the assets of each others’ resources, such as rescue equipment, vehicles, capabilities, and procedures. The two municipal agencies handle as many as 15,000 vehicle extrications annually.
At the first training session, Mayor Booker and City Business Administrator Julien X. Neals, Esq., greeted the participants before they went to work. Then, in full gear, the Police Emergency Service Unit and Ladder Company 9 broke out their extrication equipment, and removed the top and doors from two junked cars, working seamlessly to extract two mannequins, which stood in for “crash victims.”
“Newark’s Finest and Newark’s Bravest share the same mission: to protect and serve the residents of the City of Newark. This training will enable them to work more closely together than ever, provide higher quality emergency response services, and most importantly, save lives,” said Mayor Booker. “I want to express my gratitude to this extraordinary team. They are doing our best to keep us strong. In every way, they are the most exceptional police and fire departments in New Jersey.”
“I recently took part in emergency operations training in Texas with Newark employees,” said Business Administrator Neals. “And I and the other employees gained a new appreciation of what our police officers and firefighters do every day. I salute you.”
“We want these two agencies to operate as one when they respond to joint incidents,” said Director Ziyad. “Inter-operability, communication, and teamwork will save lives and protect our residents when disaster strikes. Future collaborative training initiatives are being considered that will increase public safety for Newark’s citizens. There are a number of areas in which fire and police interact yet have not done formal training together. Acting Police Director DeMaio and I understand this and see a great opportunity to better serve our community by addressing those areas with dual departmental training to form a more coordinated, cohesive response to emergencies. We want one public safety division, which is about service to the residents.”
“No one knows when or where an emergency might appear in Newark. But we all know that the Newark Police and Fire Departments will be first on the scene. This training will ensure that they work together efficiently and professionally in any emergency,” said Director DeMaio.
“There are many occasions when our police and fire departments respond to an emergency together,” said Chief Centanni. “This training will ensure that they do so seamlessly and professionally, so that we can protect lives and property more efficiently. We are committed to putting in the resources to make sure this training works. We are as committed at our command level as I am sure you are committed to it at yours. This is the first step of a long journey of collaborative effort.”
The training involves exercises that simulate extrications of people trapped or seriously injured in major car accidents. The training exercises will focus on vehicle stabilization, extrication and hose line protection to increase efficiency and effectiveness in joint response to emergency incidents. Firefighters and police officers will use vehicle extrication tools to remove “victims” from multiple wrecked vehicles. Each fire company will rotate through the training, as will the Police Emergency Service Unit. Battalion Chief Arthur Mauriello, who heads the Fire Department’s Special Operations Unit, is coordinating the training.
“The training went very well,” said Capt. Mario Martin, Executive Officer of the Police Emergency Services Unit. “We’re working together to accomplish a common goal: to serve the people of Newark.”
Since 2006, the Newark Fire Department has opened new and renovated fire stations, and added new vehicles to its inventory. In 2008, the Department graduated the 39th Recruit Class of 18 recruits from the Fire Academy In October 2009, the Newark Fire Department unveiled its new 41-foot-long Hazmat and Heavy Rescue truck which will provide firefighters with a wide array of state-of-the-art equipment, including a 9,000-pound winch, a 9,000-watt light tower, a Robotic Search Camera to investigate disasters areas difficult to access, and extrication tools for car crashes.
Over the past four years the Fire Department has also purchased three new fire engines; two ladder trucks, and several support and utility units, reducing the average age of its vehicles to close to 50 percent. The Department also saw a restructuring that led to a 67 percent reduction in overtime, as well as the creation of the region’s first Urban Search and Rescue Unit, as well as the employment of new technology, such as voice-amplified face pieces, a new CASCADE rehabilitation and tank filling apparatus, and a state-of-the-art Voice Alert System.
The Newark Fire Department also has a number of specialized units, including an Arson Unit, a Hazardous Materials Unit, a Fireboat, a Confined Space Rescue Team, a Foam Tanker, and a Cascade Unit, which responds to emergency scenes to fill air bottles. In addition, the Department is one of only nine in the State of New Jersey whose Metro Strike Team has a Collapse Unit, to deal with collapsed buildings. Most of the Department’s specialized units are assigned for regional response, to assist neighboring communities that lack such equipment and training.
Under the Booker Administration, the City of Newark has formed several new partnerships and launched numerous new initiatives and policing strategies. Since being created in 2006, the Newark Police Foundation has raised thousands of dollars in philanthropic donations to support the purchase and deployment of new crime-fighting technology, including the deployment of more than one hundred wireless video surveillance cameras, a sonic gunshot detection system, a new state-of-the-art emergency services vehicle, and the operation of the City’s “Crime Stopper” and “Gun Stopper” anonymous tip lines.
More than 1,100 officers make up the Newark Police Department, making it the largest municipal department in the State of New Jersey. This September, the Department is scheduled to open its new 5th Precinct in the South Ward, a state-of-the-art 75,000-square-foot facility that will include the City’s Office of Emergency Management. The Department also received a $1 million grant earlier this year to provide for a specialized vehicle that can read license plates numbers.

Alcinda Saphira ( Painter,Sculptor and Jewelry Designer ) is from Brazil and has been living and maintaining her studio in Hastings on Hudson, New York. Her formal art education began at the Escola De Belas Artes Federal Da Bahia in Salvador, Bahia (School of Fine Arts at Bahia Federal University). After leaving her job as a television and radio producer at TV EDUCATIVA Salvador/Ba and transferring to TV CULTURA, the public broadcasting television service in her home region Belém/Pa she sought out the traditional potteries in that part of the Amazon. For many years she traveled from one small town to another, studying ancient techniques while sharing back lessons learned at the academy. This became a crucial period in developing the visceral and political commitment to the survival of the Amazon that largely defined the shapes, colors, texture and themes of her work.
Today her work is more global and her techniques are unique. Her works are enriched by transparencies and symbolic details, resulting in multiple colors and textures.
Saphira was awarded with the first place prize atUBENY International Competition, selected bytheGuggenheim Museum critics.
Currently, Saphira has been offering art classes in her studio in Hastings on Hudson and working as a free lance curator and project coordinator for The Brazilian Endowment for the Arts located in Manhattan, NY . In addition Saphira has been working as an independent curator promoting art events at different locations, such as: The United Nations, galleries in Chelsea NYC, and the Brazilian Art Expo in Massachusetts-Brazil.
In the past has free lanced with Wingspan Art Program, an after school program for kids. Saphira has also done different workshops in places such as Central Park, Pier 17, Ardsley Country Club,Aquafest-friends of Old Croton Aqueduct and more.
In 2009 she was selected as one of the three artists to contribute to the ongoing effort to beautify Downtown Yorkers, New York. She received a commission to create a mural for a building in Downtown Yorkers (the dimensions were dictated by the size of the building façade in downtown Yorkers 21x12’feet). The painting is part of the main street project sponsored by Yonrkers Downtown Water front Business improvement District in partnership with Raising Development.
APRIL 2011 – Project MIGRATION, a projected initiated by Saphira and her partners, Rene Nascimento and Antonio Oliveira. The first exhibition took place at the New York Public Library, chelsea NYC. The fallowing Project Migration Exhibition is schedulle to occur in BAHIA Art Museum, Brazil through the months of December 2011 to January 2012.
The Project MIGRATION is aiming to create an artistic exchange among artists from all over the world. The project’s objective is to share talents, and create opportunities for artists in public and private galleries in different parts of the world.
Metamorphosis is a new series inspired by the idea of The Element of Styles. Some works are minimal and other times more intense through the use of bold colors. Each symbolism of color and shape is interpreted differently which allows us to use our own imagination. The works are surrounded by a great variety of movement of expression and liberty.
Saphira’s Studio offers Art classes for kids every Saturday from 10:15 AM-11:15 AM as well as 11:30AM - 12:30PM. The studio is located in Hastings on Hudson, New York.
The classes focus on traditional and modern art techniques using Acrylic on canvas, Water color, Assemblage, printing and more. Saphira’s Studio has also been dedicated towards teaching children how to use recycled materials and natural pigments to create different art forms.

Newark, NJ – May 17, 2011 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, Members of the Municipal Council, Acting Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio and other dignitaries saluted the valor of Newark Police Officers who have distinguished themselves in the line of duty by presenting awards for bravery and merit during a Municipal Council Chamber ceremony today. The ceremony is part of the City of Newark’s observance of National Police Week, which was originally created by federal legislation and signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, as National Peace Officer Day. Since then, the week of May 15 is observed each year to honor all law enforcement officers.
“Newark Police Officers are in their job for a profound purpose, to protect and serve our residents. They are the highest exemplars of courage, strength, duty, and purpose. They are subject to scorn until people call 911 to reach a police officer. They seek no recognition. ((The officers that we are recognizing today are deserving recipients of our respect, honor, and gratitude,” said Mayor Booker)).
During the ceremony, Mayor Booker and Acting Director DeMaio presented medals for valor and efficiency to police officers, civilian employees, and community members that supported the police. Officers were honored for standing off would-be armed carjackers, weapons seizures, and capturing armed felons. Also commended were the Emergency Service Unit and the 2nd Bureau Special Enforcement Unit. Selected for the Civilian Employee Recognition Award was Information Processing Manager Peter Lutz. Bishop Cleveland Blash received the Citizen Community Service Award. A total of 26 awards were presented at the ceremony.
“The men and women of this agency perform their duties relentlessly day in and day out, oftentimes going above and beyond the call of duty to protect Newark’s citizens. It’s a great day when we can recognize officers for a job well done and thank them for their undying willingness to keep this city safe from harm’s way,” said Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio. “I salute these officers for a job well done and look forward to recognizing others in the future. We will continue the charge to keep our city safe while improving the quality of life here for residents and visitors alike,” he added.
“I want to congratulate all of our police officers who are being honored today and to express our appreciation for the entire Newark Police Department,” said Municipal Council Vice President Anibal Ramos, Jr., speaking for his colleagues on the Council. “When it comes to the Newark Police Department, we stand in solidarity in giving them our support and gratitude.” He was joined in attendance by Council President Donald M. Payne, Jr., Council Members-at-Large Mildred Crump and Carlos Gonzalez, and Central Ward Council Member Darrin Sharif.
At the awards ceremony, Lt. Donald Robertella, the master of ceremonies, read out the citations for each officer honored, who then received his or her medal and a framed certificate from Director DeMaio.
Sgt. Leslie Jones from the Police Clergy Alliance offered the invocation and benediction. Also in attendance were Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray, Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, First Assistant Prosecutor Robert Laurino, and Essex County Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose.
This year’s 2011 “Class A” award which is the Police Department’s highest honor went to eight police officers who were involved in five separate incidents involving armed suspects. A complete list of awardees and their citations is attached.
Lt. Dennis Sanders, who received the Medal of Honor for shooting an armed suspect who attempted to carjack his personal vehicle, discussed the incident. “It was a life-altering experience for anyone to face that situation,” said the 21-year-veteran. “But sometimes the good guys prevail. I never had to face that kind of situation before, but my training prepared me for it.
“I loved the ceremony,” he added. “It shows that the community and our dignitaries care about the citizens and the police.”
“When I heard Lt. Robertella read the details of what happened that day, it brought memories back of what happened,” said Officer Latasha Merritt, who received the Medal of Honor. “And then it was a surreal feeling when I heard my name being called to receive the award. I feel honored every day to serve the community as a Newark Police Officer. I hope to be a role model for other young women who choose a career in law enforcement.” She joined the force at age 26. She was honored for shooting an armed suspect who menaced her and her partner with a loaded weapon.
After the Awards Ceremony, Mayor Booker, Acting Director DeMaio and the police officers held a memorial to honor the 50 Newark Police Officers (including one Housing Officer and one Special Police officer) who died in the line of duty during the department’s history, in the City Hall Rotunda.
The names of each of the fallen officers was read in the order they were lost, starting with Officer Maxwell Badgley, killed in 1854. Officer Badgley was not only the first Newark police officer to give his life, but the first in the entire state of New Jersey. The last name read was Sgt. Tommaso Popolizio, who was killed during the pursuit of a fleeing suspect in March 2007. A lone bagpiper played “Amazing Grace” at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Retired Newark Police Sergeant Daniel Santos, who is the curator of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 12’s Police Museum, read the names and said, “All across the country last week, police agencies honored their fallen officers, those individuals that have made the ultimate sacrifice. This practice has been performed since 1962. So, it’s only fitting to gather here once again and honor members of our family, fallen officers of the Newark Police Department. In these trying times, both socially as well as economically, officers are being asked to do more – even if it means – with less. They continue to do just that, without hesitation because they swore an oath to protect and serve. Their valor then, as well as the valor of our officers today, gives us all hope for the future.”

Indianapolis lawyer Mark S. Zuckerberg made news this week after his Facebook profile page was removed by the social network, which cited false identity issues.
Zuckerberg, who shares his first and last name with the Facebook’s co-founder and CEO, got his page back on Thursday, with apologies from the company, Indiana’s WISH-TV reported.
Just to set up his account in the first place, the lawyer had to submit copies of his driver’s license, birth certificate and Indianapolis Bar Association license, Zuckerberg said.
The social network has had similar problems with other famous names in the past.
The Today Show reported that several Kate Middletons from Boston, Australia and Britain have all been kicked off the social network in the past.
And Justin Bieber of Jacksonville, Fla. briefly found himself without a Facebook profile in 2010, after the teen pop sensation of the same name shot up the charts, First Coast News reported. Bieber said he also got daily fan letters and phone calls, despite having changed his listing in the phone book.
Zuckerberg — the lawyer — said he also seems some unwanted attention because of his name. He told WISH that he has to deal with thousands of friend requests, as well as the occasional stranger asking for a loan.

Following this mission, we are bringing to New York the US premiere of Cayendo Con Victoriano, a comedy written by Mexican playwright Luis Enrique G. Ortiz Monasterio, and directed by Luis Martin.
Based on Edith OʼShaughnessyʼs historical book, A Diplomatʼs Wife in Mexico, the play takes us back to the Mexican Revolution, describing in an intimate way the complex relationship that has always existed between the United States and Mexico. Nelson OʼShaughnessy, US Business Affairs Representative in Mexico during the presidency and dictatorship of Victoriano Huerta was sent by President Wilson to replaced US ambassador Lane Wilson, who plotted along with Huerta to overthrow president elect Francisco I. Madero. President Madero and Vice-president Pino-Suarez were forced to sign their resignation at the US Embassy, clearing Huertaʼs path to become president. Days later, Huerta ordered their assassination, marking the end of what is known as the tragic ten days, the bloodiest days of the Mexican Revolution.
Besides the OʼShaughnessyʼs, Ortiz-Monasterio makes reference to the relationship that existed between Huerta and Salvador Diaz-Miron, prominent poet and director of El Imparcial, an influential newspaper of the time. Diaz-Miron used his position to protect Huerta. It is said that he became a congressman to push and protect Huertaʼs agenda.
Cayendo con Victoriano focuses on events that took place between October 1913 to April 1914, when Mrs. OʼShaughnessy lived in Mexico with her husband. The playwright links the power struggle between Huerta and OʼShaughnessy on one side, highlighting the differences in diplomacy between the two countries, and between Huerta and Diaz-Miron, on the other side, exposing the Mexican idiosyncrasy when dealing behind closed doors.
Director Luis Martin, with more than 50 years of experience, has received the Mexicoʼs Instituto de Bellas Artesʼ Golden Medal for his contribution to the arts. Playwright Luis Enrique G. Ortiz Monasterio is considered by many a representative of the new voice in Mexican theatre. ((His plays have been translated to 7 languages and has received many awards for his work)).

Alfredo Huereca, CEO and founder of World View Productions, Inc. embodies this bridge. Born and raised in our neighboring country of Mexico, Alfredo’s life has always revolved and evolved around the arts. Since his early years, Alfredo used to spend long days drawing in the quiet of his home while his friends used to play ball outside on the street. At the same time, he participated in every single art and folk spring festival at his school. During his middle and high school years, Alfredo started incurring into theater and produced his high school’s first ever theatrical production.
While studying a bachelor’s of science as a Mechanical and Industrial Engineer at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, in Monterrey, Mexico, Alfredo continued his involvement with the arts, performing in numerous theatrical productions. One of hisperformances earned him a national award for his characterization in the lead role of Lope de Vega’s The Knight of Olmedo.
It is during this time that an event changed his life forever; an event that has guided his footsteps and influenced his decisions up until this day. At the age of twenty four, Alfredo was diagnosed with testicular cancer. During the months that followed with chemotherapy treatments, in and out of the hospital, he realized that if he would survive, if God would give him a second change,he should follow his dreams and be true to himself and his passion. He made a pledge: I will follow my dreams, no matter how crazy they might be or where they might take me. What’s the point of living if I am not going to do what I am passionate about? I will listen to my heart and help others fulfill their dreams. I will follow my heart; the rest will follow me. After finishing his bachelor’s degree, Alfredo Huereca listened to his heart and obtained a masters of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin and embarked into a journey that has taken him to playhouses and studios in Mexico and the United States. His achievements on stage have earned him a place in the Diccionario Biográfico de Coahuila and the Nuevo Diccionario Biográfico de Coahuila (Biographical Dictionary of Coahuila and New Biographical Dictionary of Coahuila), his native state in Mexico. In addition, he has received a Best Actor award by the Asociación de Críticos del Espectáculo (Theater Critics Association) in New York City and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a comedy for the Payne Awards in Austin, TX.
As a photographer, Alfredo Huereca has exhibited his work in The United States and has participated in the production of art exhibits, bringing the work of international painters to the galleries in SoHo and midtown Manhattan. True to his pledge and dreams, Alfredo has also worked with at-risk middle and high school students in New York and New Jersey. As school principal, ((Alfredo has been able to touch many young people’s lives, inculcating the arts in their hearts and minds)), always advocating for acceptance, diversity and equality.
