The Portuguese Language Institute originated in 2000 with the support of the Brazilian Consulate and the United Nations in New York. For nearly 10 years it has offered Portuguese language courses and Brazilian cultural awareness for children and adults.

In our small-group classes taught by university teaching professionals, students advance their speaking, presentation, accent, vocabulary, and writing skills with colleagues and friends who share similar interests.

Classes average 4 to 8 students per class, with a maximum of 12. The small class size ensures that everyone will be able to participate and receive the best experience possible.

We meet in our comfortable space at Two United Nations Plaza on East 44th Street, just across from UNICEF House, in Room 2000 on the 20th Floor. The building is just two blocks from Grand Central Station, which is easily reached by the # 4, 5, 6, 7 and S trains.

We strive to have you use Brazilian Portuguese in as large a variety of real-life situations as possible. To that end, our Brazilian Portuguese courses have been designed to build fluency in both spoken and written language. Communication in a warm and relaxed environment is an important feature of our programs, as is homework, which includes exercises for review and practice of the material taught in class. Moreover, by keeping the class size limited to twelve students, we ensure that each student will be able to actively participate.

There are five major course levels that we focus on and each level targets a speaking or writing skill.

Level 1
Upon completion of this course, students can expect to be able to hold basic conversations about their daily activities using present and future tenses. This course aims to provide beginning students with a practical command of the vocabulary and grammar of the language. Topics include phonetics, expressions of time and quantity, subject pronouns, articles, possessives, interrogatives, and the present indicative, present progressive and compound future tenses of common verbs.

Level 2
Building upon the basic foundation provided in Level 1, upon completion of this course, students should be able to converse with greater ease on an increasing range of topics as well as being able to read and write longer texts. Topics include prepositions, contractions, irregular verbs, demonstrative pronouns, ordinal numbers, adverbs, pronouns and tag questions. Students develop their ability to conjugate verbs in the preterit imperfect, preterit perfect, past progressive and present indicative verb tenses.

Level 3
Building upon the skills studied in Level 2, students rapidly expand their vocabulary and begin to express themselves more precisely as they learn to use the simple future, past perfect and subjunctive tenses. Among the topics introduced at this level are idiomatic expressions, object pronouns, reflexive verbs, comparative and superlative forms, telling time, adverbs, and the passive voice.

Level 4
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to discuss with greater precision topics including Southeastern and Southwestern Brazil, travel, study, work and festive occasions. Building upon the skills already acquired, students study reflexive verbs and pronouns, linking words, adjective and adverb clauses, diminutive and augmentative forms, and the preterit future tense.

Level 5
For students who wish to further expand their skills, this course introduces more advanced topics including the compound subjunctive and the personal infinitive. This course helps students to tie together all the elements of grammar and usage covered up to this point. Students practice and refine their skills by discussing topics including Southern Brazil, media, sports and other social activities, clothing, parts of the body and health.

Conversational Portuguese
This program is designed for students who are already proficient in the skills taught in Levels 1-5 and who want to increase their conversational abilities. Conducted entirely in Portuguese, this course provides students with an opportunity to markedly improve their speaking and listening skills. Magazines, video and audio tapes, and other resources designed to provide practical opportunities for vocabulary and skill development are selected to match student interests. Grammatical topics are addressed as needed.

NEWARK, NJ: Last Thursday, November 11th, Broken Clouds, the latest short film by award-winning, local filmmaker Yuri Alves, 26, premiered to a delighted, standing-room only audience of more than 500 at the Sport Club Português ballroom in the Ironbound section of Newark. Flanked by jumbo skytracking lights and welcomed by an 80 foot red carpet, hundreds of people lined up at the entrance around 8pm to experience an extraordinary evening of entertainment.

After an hour-long cocktail featuring Portuguese hors d'ouevres, the show's M.C., Bryan Cabo of DreamPlay Productions, thanked the event's supporters and introduced several special guests, who addressed the audience with a few brief remarks: namely, NJ State Assemblyman Al Coutinho, the Consul-general of Portugal Dr. Maria Amélia Paiva and the president of the Ironbound Business Improvement District, Dr. Seth Grossman, each of whom congratulated and celebrated the films presented and the event itself.

The screenings began with two 5-minute films celebrating the appeal of Newark, the Go Ironbound Video Tour and Brick City, each directed by Yuri Alves. They were immediately followed by one of two main showcase presentations: “Mano a Mano”, a 40 minute episode that Alves directed as part of the upcoming Portuguese television prime-time series Tempo Final. It did not take long for the audience to be gripped by the psychological and visual intensity of the story, which depicts one woman's shocking discovery of her dentist husband's long time infidelity.

Following a ten-minute intermission, the audience was treated to a truly unique musical mini-set by the band at At a Distance, who performed two engrossing tracks from the night's main presentation Broken Clouds. They were accompanied by a custom-prepared, synced video installation comprised of images from the world of Broken Clouds. The live show segued into the world premiere screening of Broken Clouds, a 20 minute short film recently completed by local, award-winning writer-director Yuri Alves. The film was shot in Newark and surrounding areas over a one and a half year period. It depicts the experience of a lone survivor in the aftermath of a mass extinction of life on the planet. The program concluded with a brief Q&A session with the director, the producer Igor Alves and the cast, Vinicius Vieira, Klemen Novak, Candace Janee and David Nash, who also provided interviews to various media outlets in attendance. Yuri Alves has begun to submit the film to festivals worldwide and was glad to announce that his first reply was a successful one: the film was accepted at the New Jersey Film Festival.

The cast, as well as audience and staff members also recorded short messages and feedback at the event, which were uploaded in real time to the Broken Clouds Facebook page: www.facebook.com/brokenclouds. Hundreds of people followed the evening's protagonists to two after-parties in the Ironbound, held at Mompou Tapas Bar and Hell's Kitchen Lounge. Finally, DreamPlay Productions, the event's organizers, donated ten percent of the door proceeds to the Wildlife Conservation Society at a lunch held on Sunday at Café Opção in the Ironbound. Synopsis of Broken Clouds

In a not so distant future, plants refuse to grow, and life as we know it ceases to exist. A forsaken survivor (Vinicius Vieira) miraculously resists death, roaming past the decaying corpses and vestiges of our bygone world. Sustained by the memory of his lost lover (Candace Janee) he embarks on a mission to plant three seeds, which he is convinced have the power to restart life on this planet. His journey is further challenged by a tense encounter with another lonely survivor (Klemen Novak), who tests his resolve and sanity, each increasingly fragile amid the backdrop of human extinction.

About the Filmmaker

Yuri Alves is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, director, producer and editor of more than fifteen films. He has shot, directed and/or edited films, commercials and other projects for several production companies in New York and overseas. He directed and produced his first feature film at the age of twenty. Yuri is credited with being the first filmmaker to produce and exhibit a film about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks (screening “The Day the World Changed” on September 18, 2001 to an audience of 2500).

Yuri has won multiple awards at film festivals across the United States. His works have screened multiple times at the Anthology Film Archives and other venues in New York City, and his films have been twice named Official Selections at the New York International HBO Latino Film Festival. In 2007, Yuri was a semi-finalist in the Steven Spielberg-produced television show, ‘On the Lot’. The next year, Yuri’s comedic “High Hopes” was selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner 2008. Also in 2008, Yuri co-founded, with his brother Igor, DreamPlay Productions, a multimedia and video production company, where he serves as Creative Director. Newark, NJ – November 15, 2010 – Mayor Cory A. Booker and Acting Business Administrator Julien X. Neals, Esq., announced today that the City is offering, now through November 30, 2010, an “Amnesty Program” to assist struggling property owners who are in arrears on their property taxes, Water and Sewer bills, and special taxes by canceling interest and penalties on payments made in full during this period.

“This program is especially needed during these challenging economic times and will not only generate millions of dollars in revenue for our City but will assist our residents who are already overdue on their bills. By participating in this program residents who are in arrears on their taxes will avoid further penalties. This amnesty program is a win-win situation for everyone,” Mayor Booker said.

“The City of Newark, like many communities throughout the State, has been affected by the strained national economic climate. The crisis has also affected our City’s government as revenue collections have been below expectations. Nevertheless, ((our City has an obligation to its citizens to help find ways to provide relief for taxpayers)) while the sluggish economy strives to correct itself in the coming months,” said Acting Business Administrator Neals.

“This program is especially needed during these challenging economic times and will not only generate much needed revenue for the City, but will assist our residents who are already overdue on their bills,” said City Tax Collector Michelle Jones.

During this amnesty period, any resident who pays overdue real estate or special taxes, or water and sewer bills, will not have to pay the penalties and interest associated with those bills. Payments must be made for the entire delinquent period, and by “certified funds only.” All payments postmarked after November 30 will be assessed interest and penalties as mandated by law without regard to the amnesty program.

New York, September 9, 2010  - Over 1.5 million people attended the 26th Annual Brazilian Independence Day in New York City to commemorate the 188th anniversary of Brazil on September 7, 1822.  Every year New York comes alive with parades, dancing, singing and eating; Brazilians gather in the streets dancing and waving the national flag, streamers and banners to inaugurate this important holiday and just having a great time. 

The center of the party is 46th Street, which on a normal day is a typical midtown side street.  The only item giving away its uniqueness is a street sign "Little Brazil Street” but each for the annual celebration of Brazilian Independence Day, the street is transformed as the center of a humongous party encompassing  25 blocks surrounding 46th Street.

Two massive stages erected on 6th avenue held the performances of popular Brazilian entertainers while Globo TV televised the show to Brazil and 135 other countries. At the same time Vejatv.com, the primary web television of the Brazilian community in the United Sates, conducted hundreds of interviews with the joyous revelers and surprise guest star of the event,  Carlinho Brown.

Brazilian Day organizer João de Matos is an established icon in the Brazilian community.  He is the owner of a succesful Brazilian-inspired business, including the upscale Plataforma restaurant and BACC a travel agency catering to the Brazilian community. He explained that the party loses money every year—this year he says it cost $500,000—he feels he owes it to the Brazilian community.

"They work the whole year, they have problems like everybody else," de Matos says. "If they can't go to Brazil, OK. I want one weekend a year to bring Brazil to them."

The headliners this year are the ultra-popular country duo Zézé di Camargo and Luciano. TV personality Luciano Huck will be the MC, Carlinho Brown turned up as a surprise guest to the pleasure of all.

In accordance with the celebration, each year a prestigious Award is given to people who have made important contributions to Brazilian Culture. This year Pat Philips and Ettore Stratta are being honored. At a large private gathering at the prestigious Plataform Restaurant, important persons involved in the Brazilian Day Events, were presented this Award in recognition of their many years of presenting and recording Brazilian music on the highest level. Their honrees’ first major event was 1989 starring Antonio Carlos Jobim at Carnegie Hall along with his Band from Brazil, Gal Costa and Dori Caymmi.

Philips & Stratta have been dedicated to Brazilian music ever since and presenting it in the highest form and in unique programs bringing pride to the Brazilian community and spreading the joy of this music to the public.

They continued to produce major concerts at Carnegie Hall and included top Brazilian artists Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Eliane Elias, Joyce, Simone, Leila Pinheiro, Oscar Castro-Neves, Joao Bosco, Jacques & Paula Morelenbaum...and more. They presented them alongside major US artists such as The Orpheus Orchestra, Branford Marsalis, Toots Thielemans, Herbie Mann, Al Jarreau, and many others to showcase Brazilian music in the most interesting and virtuosic settings.

It was performed by The Royal Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of London with Guests, Al Jarrreau, Dori Caymmi, Gary Burton, Hubert Laws, Mike Renzi, Claudio Roditi, Tom Scott..again bringing together both Brazilian and American artists in the highest level of presentation. Maestro also conducted The Royal Philharmonic in Sao Paulo, the music of this CD.

Philips & Stratta  created ‘BossaBrasil', a Festival at the top music venue Birdland, once again showcasing Brazilian talent with artists such as Leny Andrade, Emilio Santigao, Marcos Valle, Dori Caymmi, Romero Lubambo, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Joyce, and more which is happening this week, August 31 - Sept. 4th, featuring the very talented LENY ANDRADE (Reservations, at Birdland, 212 581 3080).

Their relationship with the brilliant Jobim is ongoing with a project in the works to record his music with a major symphony orchestra. However he passed away before it was realized. Other upcoming plans include projects with Eumir Deodato, Marcos Valle, and more.

Well this year’s party is hardly over and Edilberto Mendes, the party’s executive organizer, is already on his cell phone planning Brazilian Day 2011.

Newark, NJ – September 3, 2010 – Mayor Cory A. Booker announced today that the City’s “Bicycle Tour of Newark,” will hold a 25-mile non-competitive bicycle ride through all five of the City’s wards, on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The rain date is September 25. Check-in and registration for the event will start at 7 a.m. on the steps of City Hall, at 920 Broad Street. The event will also include a 5-mile Family Ride through Newark’s Downtown, which is suitable for families and children aged 8 to 14. The tour and Family Ride will both start promptly at 9 a.m.

“I am looking forward to leading Newark residents and visitors on a grand tour of our sacred City. I commend our Recreation team and our partners for their dedication and commitment in creating this tour. Newark has a long and celebrated history as a center of cycling. We are restoring that tradition as we revitalize Newark,” said Mayor Booker.

The 25-mile course will take riders through Newark’s neighborhoods past major landmarks through all five wards of the city. The tour will end at the corner of Broad and Green Streets in the City’s Downtown. The tour will include a regrouping point at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Clifton Avenue and a rest stop at the Boylan Recreation Center at 916 South Orange Avenue in the City’s West Ward.

The “Bicycle Tour of Newark” is free and open to the public. All riders must wear protective helmets. Anyone under the age of 18 must have consent from a parent or guardian. All children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The first 150 cyclists to register will receive a free bike helmet. T-shirts will also be given out while supplies last. Rest stops, snacks, beverages, and a full police escort will be provided along the route. There will also be a drawing to give away brand new “TREK” adult bicycles.

“The Newark Bicycle Tour is helping us restore the history of cycling back to its historic site, Newark, and also propels our city to become environmentally-conscious and family-fit, leading the race in America for healthy communities,” said Acting Recreation Manager Cathy Lenix-Hooker.

Team Newark, a healthy lifestyle and fitness project initiated by the Harbourton Foundation in partnership with the City of Newark’s Division of Recreation/Cultural Affairs, is one of the main sponsors of the bike ride. Additional co-sponsors include Newark Now, Brick City Bicycle Collective, East Coast Greenway, and Newark Amateur Radio Society, Inc. 

“Team Newark embodies our belief that healthy individuals create healthy communities,” said Jason Regan of the Harbourton Foundation. “We hope that this initiative will help re-ignite the historic bike culture of Newark.”

To help prepare cyclists for the 25-mile tour, the City is offering organized Pre-Tour Training Rides led by experienced cyclists, every Wednesday, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the Weequahic Park “Horse Track.”

Newark, NJ – August 20, 2010 – Mayor Cory A. Booker and Deputy Mayor of Economic and Housing Development Stefan Pryor announced today that the City of Newark in partnership with the Hackensack Riverkeeper will be offering Newark Riverfront Boat Tours for Summer 2010 this weekend and next. A complete list of dates and times are listed below.
 
“Our city exists because of its river,” said Mayor Booker. “It is the reason that people came to this place: Native Americans, European Puritans, American Industrialists, and the Great Migration of African-Americans. But for too long Newarkers have been alienated and blocked off from their riverfront. My administration is dedicated to bringing Newark and Newarkers back to the water.”
 
The riverboat tours travel over six miles along Newark’s riverfront twice a day. A Hackensack RiverkeeperCaptain will discuss the riverfront’s past and future history with participants. The tour highlights the riverfront’s natural beauty (egrets, cormorants, and herons), active industry (metal recycling to mattress manufacturing), monumental structures (Pulaski Skyway and the “Little Orphan Annie” bridge), Downtown Newark and several neighborhoods.
 
“Under Mayor Booker’s leadership, the City of Newark has reengaged with its historic waterfront,” said Stefan Pryor, Deputy Mayor for Economic and Housing Development.  “This year, we will construct the first section of Newark Riverfront Park – a three acre space that will contain a walking and biking trail, a floating boat dock, a riverfront boardwalk, and settings to rest, picnic, exercise, and learn about the environment.  This past spring, Essex County announced the public acquisition of 12 acres of riverfront land in the Ironbound, bringing us a step closer to our future vision for our waterfront: a network of riverfront parks stretching through the Ironbound, Downtown, and up into Lower Broadway and the North Ward.  Thanks to City Waterfront Planner Damon Rich for his orchestration and skill, and to our County partners and other collaborators, who have made our initiative possible.”
 
“We’re happy to be once again partnering with Newark Riverfront Regeneration on what I’m sure will be a another successful season of Eco-Cruises on the Passaic,” said Captain Bill Sheehan, the Hackensack Riverkeeper. “Weather permitting, we could even double the number of folks we took on the river last year. The boats are comfortable and the company is always great. Plus it’s a real honor to help introduce the sons and daughters of Newark to their river; and to share some good times on the water.”
 
The tours and other innovative outreach and constituency-building programs have been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Hackensack Riverkeeper is providing boats and their captains.
 
"The movement to reclaim Newark's riverfront begins with people seeing it with their own eyes. Last summer, over 200 Newarkers experienced their city by boat. This summer, 400 will do the same. That's how the curious become advocates for their neighborhoods and their city, and how we will continue to build momentum and win victories to create the riverfront that Newark wants,” said City of Newark Urban Designer and Waterfront Planner Damon Rich who will lead the tours.

Seating is limited.  Boats can accommodate up to 15 people per trip. The first boat ride will leave at 9 a.m., returning at 12:30 p.m., and the second trip will launch from the dock at 11 a.m., returning at 2:30 p.m.
 
The City of Newark, partnered with the County of Essex and the Trust for Public Land, have secured funds to construct the first phase of Newark Riverfront Park, the city’s first true riverfront park. Using a site owned by the City, the County, and the State of New Jersey, Lee Weintraub Landscape Architects and Hatch Mott MacDonald Engineers have developed a 7-acre plan based on residents’ ideas and desires. Secured funding sources include the Urban Enterprise Zone, NJDEP Green Acres and HDSRF Program, Essex County Open Space Trust Fund, NJDOT I BOAT NJ Program, NY/NJ Baykeeper, and private sources. The plan includes a walkway/bikeway, lawns for relaxing, a boardwalk, and a floating boat dock. Development of the site will begin with environmental remediation of the former industrial parcels, followed by the creation of park facilities, including a public access floating dock, a riverfront trail, and new plantings. The project will be enhanced with improved pedestrian connections to the surrounding Ironbound (East Ward) neighborhood. The park will also include the first portion of the Joseph G. Minish Riverfront Trail, a long-term project to create a pedestrian promenade along the length of the Passaic River in Newark.
 
In April 2010, Mayor Cory A. Booker, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr., East Ward Council Member Augusto Amador, and other dignitaries announced that Essex County acquired 12.33 acres of property in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood which will be redeveloped into the Essex County Riverfront Park. This would be the fourth new park added to the historic Essex County Park System during the last four years.

About the City of Newark, New Jersey
Newark, commonly referred to as Brick City, is the third oldest city in the United States and the largest in New Jersey, with a population of more than 280,000 people. Newark sits on one of the nation’s largest transportation super-structures including an international airport, major rail connections, major highway intersections and the busiest seaport on the east coast.
 
With a new Administration as of July 2006, Newark continues to see signs of a strong revival. In population, it is one of the fastest growing cities in the northeast. Its six major colleges and universities are further expanding their presence. The production of affordable housing has doubled, businesses are returning and crime is going down. There is still much work to be done but Newark is on its way to achieving its mission: to set a national standard for urban transformation.
 
About the Newark Riverfront Regeneration
Newark Riverfront Regeneration (NRR), an initiative of the Newark Department of Economic and Housing Development, aims to regenerate Newark’s riverfront to bring concrete benefits to the City of Newark and its residents. Since 2008, NRR has built support for Newark’s riverfront by taking hundreds of people on boat and walking tours, hosting dozens of outreach events, organizing design education programs for youth, and staging a City Hall exhibition. This year, in partnership with the County of Essex and the Trust for Public Land, the City of Newark will begin construction on the first section of Newark Riverfront Park, containing a walking and biking trail, floating boat dock, riverfront boardwalk, and other settings for relaxation, picnics, exercise, and environmental education.
 
About the Hackensack RiverKeeper:
Founded by Captain Bill Sheehan in 1997, Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc. (HRI) is the citizen-steward of the Hackensack River. HRI works for the protection, preservation and restoration of the Hackensack River and its 165 square-mile watershed.  Over the years, their advocacy and action have resulted in the protection of over 12,000 acres of wetlands, woodlands and waterways from the New York line to Newark Bay. HRI fights for public access and the creation of new parks. Their legal victories include a $500 million court-ordered cleanup – just across the bay from Newark.  Hackensack Riverkeeper is well-known for its environmental education programs. Each year from May through October, Captain Bill and fellow Captain Hugh Carola conduct Eco-Cruises aboard the vessels Robert H. Boyle and Edward Abbey on the Hackensack and Passaic Rivers; and Newark Bay. HRI also conducts regular River Cleanups, monitors public officials, and maintains an active legal presence in the region. Harrison-NJ, July 21 2010. Red Bull Arena hosted today the Barclays New York Challenge beginning Thursday, and the four clubs participated in a press conference today at Red Bull Arena that was streamed live on NewYorkRedBulls.com.  Representing Sporting Lisbon was: Paolo Brito & Daniel Carriço.  Representing Manchester City will be: Roberto Mancini & Gareth Barry.  Representing Tottenham Hotspur was: Harry Redknapp & Robbie Keane.  Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe and a Red Bulls player also participated.  World Series of Football president Stuart Webb  and press officer Tom Caraccioli hosted the press conference.

New York Red Bulls, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sporting Lisbon compete in the first soccer tournament at Red Bull Arena.  On July 22, the New York Red Bulls take on Tottenham Hotspur at 8:00 PM ET.
